How to Get Around Tulum in 2026: A Practical Transportation Guide

Tulum may look compact on Google Maps, but getting around Tulum is not always as simple as it seems.

Downtown, La Veleta, Aldea Zamá, the newer residential areas, the Hotel Zone and the beach are spread across several kilometers. Add tropical heat, occasional heavy rain, traffic and inconsistent sidewalks, and choosing the right transportation can make a real difference to your stay or your daily life if you live here.

The good news is that transportation in Tulum has improved significantly. Beyond bicycles, colectivos and traditional taxis, residents and visitors can now use apps such as inDrive, Eiby and DiDi.

There is no single best option. Most people who know Tulum combine two or three.

First, Understand Tulum's Geography

One reason transportation advice can be confusing is that Tulum is often treated as one compact town. It isn't.

Tulum Centro is relatively easy to navigate on foot and contains restaurants, supermarkets, shops, banks and the ADO terminal.

La Veleta, Aldea Zamá and newer residential areas extend farther outward, where a bike, scooter or car becomes more useful.

Then there is the Hotel Zone, a long coastal road lined with hotels, restaurants and beach clubs. Distances there are greater than many first-time visitors expect and traffic can become slow during busy periods.

This is why the best way to get around depends heavily on where you are staying and where you actually plan to go.

inDrive, Eiby, DiDi or Uber: Which Ride App Works in Tulum?

The ride-hailing situation in Quintana Roo has evolved, and in 2026 inDrive, Eiby and DiDi are all worth knowing about.

inDrive

For everyday rides, inDrive is one of the first apps we would check. Instead of automatically setting the fare, the app lets you propose a price for your trip. Drivers can accept it or make a counteroffer, and you choose between the available options based on price, vehicle and driver rating.

inDrive has received authorization to operate in Quintana Roo and it has become a practical alternative for trips around Centro, La Veleta, Aldea Zamá and other parts of Tulum.

The main limitation is supply. If there are few nearby drivers or your proposed fare is too low, you may not receive an offer immediately.

Tip: don't automatically choose the cheapest driver. Check the rating, car and license plate as well.

Eiby Taxi

Eiby Taxi connects passengers with taxi drivers through an app. Its biggest advantage is transparency: instead of negotiating with a taxi on the street, you can see the trip information and fare before booking.

It can work particularly well around Centro, La Veleta and Aldea Zamá, although availability can be less reliable at busy times or in parts of the Hotel Zone.

For this reason, we would install both Eiby and inDrive rather than relying on only one.

DiDi

DiDi has also become increasingly relevant in Tulum.

It does not yet have the same consistently large driver network you might find in Mexico City or other major cities, but it is worth checking, particularly when inDrive or Eiby have limited availability. Think of it as another useful option rather than your only transportation plan.

What about Uber?

Uber currently lists Tulum as a location where users can request rides, but the situation remains less straightforward. The platform has faced an ongoing regulatory dispute in Quintana Roo and practical driver availability can also be inconsistent.

As a result, for now inDrive, Eiby and increasingly DiDi are more useful apps to have ready.

Traditional Taxis: Convenient, but Confirm the Fare First

Taxis remain everywhere in Tulum, particularly around Centro, hotels, restaurants and the beach. Their main disadvantage is price transparency.

Unlike cities where taxis always operate with a visible meter, Tulum fares are generally based on zones. For visitors who do not know the normal price, this can make a simple trip surprisingly difficult to evaluate.

Before getting in, ask: “¿Cuánto me cobra hasta ___?” Agree on the total price first.

If you plan to pay by card, also ask whether cards are accepted and whether the quoted price changes. Having some Mexican pesos in cash is still useful.

Residents often do something even simpler: once they find a reliable taxi driver, they save the driver's WhatsApp number. Having a couple of trusted contacts is especially useful for early airport trips or late nights.

Colectivos: The Cheapest Way to Travel

A colectivo is a shared van following an established route, and it remains one of the cheapest ways to move around Tulum.

For visitors, the two most useful routes are:

• Centro ↔ Hotel Zone
• Tulum ↔ Akumal / Playa del Carmen along Highway 307

The Hotel Zone vans leave from the Centro area and are particularly useful during the day. Fares are inexpensive and generally paid in cash.

The downside is that colectivos can become crowded, have little space for luggage and do not operate like a scheduled city bus system.

If the route works for you, they are excellent value. If you want door-to-door convenience, use an app or taxi instead.

Bicycle and E-Bike: Still One of Tulum's Best Options

Despite all the transportation apps, the bicycle remains one of the easiest ways to move around Tulum.

The terrain is mostly flat, and bikes work particularly well between Centro, Aldea Zamá, parts of La Veleta, Avenida Cobá and the beginning of the beach area.

An e-bike can be even better for longer stays, especially if you want the flexibility of a bicycle without arriving at your destination overheated.

There are bike lanes along some important roads, but Tulum is not one continuous bicycle network. Secondary streets can be rough, some roads are poorly illuminated and midday heat can be intense.

Scooter: Particularly Practical for Residents

For someone staying several weeks or living in Tulum, a scooter can be one of the most convenient options. It is faster than a bicycle, much easier to park than a car and practical for moving between Centro, La Veleta, Aldea Zamá, residential areas and the beach.

But Tulum is not the ideal place to learn to ride one. Potholes, speed bumps, rain, sand and poorly illuminated roads require attention and experience. Always use a proper helmet and check what the rental insurance actually covers.

For experienced riders, however, a scooter often provides the best balance between mobility, cost and convenience.

Do You Need a Car in Tulum?

For a short vacation focused on Centro and the beach: probably not.

For someone living here: possibly.

A car becomes much more useful if you have children, live farther from Centro, make frequent supermarket trips or regularly visit cenotes and lagoons around Tulum, go to Playa del Carmen and other destinations around the Riviera Maya.

For everyday trips inside Tulum, however, a car also brings disadvantages: beach traffic, parking and short journeys that are often easier on a scooter or bike.

A remote worker living close to Centro might comfortably use an e-bike plus inDrive.

A family living farther out may find a car essential.

Walking: Good Locally, Not Everywhere

Walking works very well within Tulum Centro and inside individual neighborhoods. But distances between Centro, residential areas and the beach are larger than they appear, particularly in the heat.

Think of walking as neighborhood transportation, rather than your main way of moving across Tulum.

Getting to Tulum: Airport, ADO and Tren Maya

The following options are more relevant for getting to Tulum than for moving around once you are here.

From Tulum International Airport, ADO provides scheduled bus service into Tulum and is usually the most economical option for solo travelers. ADO also connects Tulum with Playa del Carmen, Cancun and other regional destinations.

For couples, families or groups with luggage, a pre-booked private transfer may be more convenient and can become reasonable when the cost is shared.

The Tren Maya is useful for longer-distance travel around the Yucatán Peninsula, but it is not local transportation. You will still need a taxi, ride app or other option between the station and your final destination in the town.

Which Option Should You Choose?

For a short visit, we would combine a bike or e-bike during the day, inDrive/Eiby when you need a car and colectivos when the route is convenient.

For a one-month stay, an e-bike or scooter and ride apps offers much more independence.

For full-time residents, the answer depends on lifestyle. A scooter plus app-based rides can work very well for one person or a couple. Families and residents who frequently travel outside town will usually get more value from having a car.

And for the Hotel Zone, always think about your return trip before you leave. App availability can be less predictable late at night, so having a taxi or trusted driver as a backup is useful.

So, What Is the Best Way to Get Around Tulum?

The best way to get around Tulum depends on how long you are staying, where you are based and how much flexibility you want.

For most visitors, a bike or e-bike during the day, combined with inDrive or Eiby when you need a car, is the most practical setup. Colectivos and traditional taxis are useful alternatives for specific routes or when app availability is limited.

For longer stays, a scooter or car can make daily life much easier, especially if you live outside the central areas or plan to explore beyond Tulum.

What has changed most is the amount of choice. Tulum is no longer a place where you have to rely almost entirely on taxis. With ride apps, bikes, scooters, colectivos and regional transport, it is much easier to choose the right option for each trip.

A little planning still helps, especially for beach trips and late-night returns, but once you understand how the different options fit together, getting around Tulum becomes surprisingly simple.
